Connecticut players Larry Bausher and Steve Becker surged into the lead in the Super Senior Pairs with a 63.83% game in the first final session and survived a below-average game in the second final session to win the event by slightly more than 10 matchpoints.
Second place went to Bert Newman and Leonard Melander of West Bloomfield MI. It was the first North American championship for Bausher, the second for Becker, a bridge teacher and syndicated bridge columnist. Becker was a member of the team that tied for first in the Keohane North American Swiss Teams in 1980.
Craig Robinson and Jeffrey Taylor, who won the event last year, finished third.
