With one round to go, Billy Eisenberg and Connie Goldberg were holding onto first place in the Senior Mixed Pairs, leading by about five matchpoints. On the penultimate board, they had a bad result and slipped to third, but then rallied for a near top on the final deal to win the event by .55 matchpoints.
Second place went the Massachusetts pairs of Pat McDevitt, Brookline, and Margie Sullivan, Sagamore Beach. They were in first before the final board was played.
The victory was the first ACBL national pairs championship for Goldberg, who lives in Merion Station PA. Her previous North American titles came in what is now the Marsha May Sternberg Women’s Board-a-Match Teams in 1997 and the Wagar Women’s Knockout Teams in 1999.
Eisenberg, a five-time world champion now with 15 North American titles, earned his second pairs title. He and Bobby Goldman won the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs in 1968. Eisenberg lives in Perris CA.
Goldberg and Eisenberg have been playing together close to a decade. Before becoming her partner, Eisenberg was coaching Goldberg and a former partner, Wafik Abdou. The two won the World Bridge Productions Open Pairs, part of the Cavendish
Invitational Pairs tournament in 2006.
