Ernesto d’Orsi, president of the South American Bridge Federation and a top World Bridge Federation administrator for more than three decades, died on Jan. 9 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He was 78. The former engineer and businessman was involved in the organization of every world championship from 1996 to the 2014 tournament in Sanya, China, last fall. D’Orsi was tournament committee chair for the 2009 World Teams Championship in his home town of Sao Paulo. He was chosen for the WBF Executive Council in 1980. D’Orsi served as WBF president from 1990 to 1992, filling the vacancy created when WBF President Denis Howard resigned. D’Orsi was elected to the WBF’s prestigious Committee of Honor in 1986 and was selected as the 1994 Personality of the Year by the International Bridge Press Association. The Senior Bowl, contested in odd-numbered years at WBF championships, is named after d’Orsi.
