Jean Molnar, a veteran tournament director beloved by co-workers and players, lost her 2 ½ year battle with cancer on Friday, March 18.
Molnar, a former kindergarten teacher and bridge player since age 12, started directing in the early Nineties at the suggestion of the manager of Adventures in Bridge, the club in San Diego where she played. She was hired to work at tournaments by TD Tom Quinlan in 1995 and became a full-time ACBL employee in 2004.
Molnar won the Fred Friendly Award in 2004, an award named after the late TD Paul Stehly. She was recognized by her fellow directors for her warmth, good cheer, friendliness and courtesy towards bridge players. ACBL management recognized her with the Jane Johnson Award in 2010.
The Jane Johnson Award has been given in recognition to both headquarters and field employees since 2001.
Beginning this year, the Jean Molnar Award will be given annually to an ACBL field employee who exemplifies extraordinary care and concern for our members.
