In an exciting match loaded with star power, Team Hamman broke loose in the final segment to win the Senior U.S. Bridge Championship 175-147. The winners will represent the U.S. at the 2016 World Bridge Games in Wroclaw, Poland in September.
The victors are Reese Milner-Hemant Lall, Mark Lair-Bob Hamman and Zia Mahmood-Jeff Meckstroth. Petra Hamman is the squad’s non-playing captain.
The championship battle pitted the one seed, Hamman, against six seed Wolfson. The teams played 90 deals over six, 15-board segments.
Jeffrey Wolfson captained the runners-up: Neil Silverman, Chip Martel-Michael Rosenberg and David Berkowitz-Alan Sontag.
The Hamman team came off the starting block strongly, and finished the first day of play with a 70-27 advantage. A new day, a new leader as the Wolfson team stormed back on Wednesday morning with a 64-19 third set to go ahead by 3. Back-to-back 11-IMP pick-ups to open the fourth leg extended their lead.
After a 7-7 penultimate segment, Wolfson entered the last 15 deals up by 13 IMPs. Hamman then proceeded to build an insurmountable lead on the strength of four, 12-IMP swings.
Five of the Hamman players won the D’Orsi Trophy at the world championships last year in Chennai, India. Rosenberg was the sixth gold medalist on the 2015 team. This year, Meckstroth – in his first year of eligibility to play in world senior events – is Zia’s partner on the Hamman squad.
