Two Nashville-area players took the lead after two qualifying sessions of the Baldwin North American Pairs, Flight A, increased it with a big game in the first final session then held on to win the event by fewer than four matchpoints.
The winners, representing District 10, are Bryan Howard, Nashville, and Terry Spector, Franklin, part of the Nashville metro area.
The victory was the first North American championship for each player.
Second place went to District 25 players Doug Doub and Frank Merblum, trying for their third win in the event. They also have another second-place finish.
Howard and Spector took a slim lead of six matchpoints into the two final sessions (13 top) on Thursday and increased it to more than 20 matchpoints with a 64.84% effort in the first final session.
The winners’ final score was 416.48 to 412.51 for second place.
