The squad led by 16-year-old Hunter McClain defeated Kenneth Hopke’s team in the final of the Mini-Spingold II (0-1500) KO Teams, 170-119. McClain’s teammates were Kenneth Ramaley (his father), Benjamin Kompa and Xiyuan Ge.
Playing with Hopke were Phil Feldman, Betty Nolte and Jerry Nolte.
The McClain squad came to Chicago to represent District 7 in Flight C of the Grand National Teams, where they advanced to the semifinal round before being eliminated.
McClain attends Nation Ford High School in Fort Mill SC with his dad, Ramaley, who is a consultant. Kompa, 20, is an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina, and Ge, 23, is a UNC graduate who is now in grad school at New York University.
Ge and Kompa were second in the 2015 North American Pairs Flight C this spring.
The McClain team was originally seeded 25th out of 26 squads because of their low masterpoint total: No member of the squad has more than 300 masterpoints.
