Disappointed to have lost in the second round of the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams, Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell took their frustration out on the field in the Silodor Open Pairs, winning the event by 92 matchpoints on a 90 top.
Second place in the event went to Phyllis Fireman and John Kranyak. “It’s good to win again,” said Meckstroth, who earned his 58thNorth American championship. Rodwell has 59. “We haven’t won a national event since Chicago (last summer) and that’s a long drought for us.”
After the first day of play, the twosome – among the most successful pairs in bridge history – were in sixth place, about 70 matchpoints out of first.
In the first final session, they scored 66.11% to take the lead by about two-thirds of a board. They increased the margin with a 58.94% game in the second final session.
