A U.S. squad has advanced to the semifinal round in each of the three divisions — Open, Women’s and Seniors — of the 41st World Bridge Team Championships in Bali, Indonesia.
In the Bermuda Bowl (the World Open Team Championship), USA1 defeated Canada in the quarterfinal round 214–158.7. The U.S. team (John Kranyak–Gavin Wolpert, Kevin Bathurst–Kevin Dwyer, Robert Levin–Steve Weinstein and npc Shane Blanchard) next faces Monaco (Pierre Zimmermann–Franck Multon, Claudio Nunes–Fulvio Fantoni, Geir Helgemo–Tor Helness and npc Jean Charles Allavena). Monaco beat England in the quarterfinal 278–226.3.
In the other semifinal bracket, Italy will take on Poland. Italy defeated China in the previous round 242–146.3, while Poland easily handled the defending champions from the Netherlands, 242–119.3.
In the Venice Cup (the World Women’s Team Championship), USA2 beat Poland 173–125. The Americans (Disa Eythorsdottir–Janice Seamon-Molson, Jenny Wolpert–Jill Levin, Jill Meyers–Migry Zur Campanile and npc Sue Picus) will play the Netherlands (Carla Arnolds–Wietske van Zwol, Marion Michielsen–Meike Wortel, Jet Pasman–Anneke Simons and npc Alex van Reenen) in the semifinal. The Dutch beat Turkey 166–131 to advance.
The other semifinal pairing is England vs. China. In the quarterfinal, England took the measure of USA1 203–138, while China ousted the defending champions from France in a tight match, 204–192.
In the d’Orsi Seniors Cup (the World Senior Bowl), USA2 destroyed Scotland in the quarterfinal round 288–139. The U.S. squad (Carolyn Lynch–Mike Passell, Roger Bates–Garey Hayden, Marc Jacobus–Eddie Wold and npc Donna Compton) will face Poland (Julian Klukowski–Victor Markowicz, Apolinary Kowalski–Jacek Romanski, Krzysztof Lasocki–Jerzy Russyan and npc Wlodzimierz Wala) in the semifinal. Poland beat Belgium 236–163 in the quarterfinal.
The other semininal matchup: France (the defending champions) vs. Germany. France massacred the Netherlands 251–91 in the previous round, while Germany took out Indonesia 222–172.
