Edmund Wu got a late birthday present whe his team won the 0-5000 Mini-Spingold two days after he turned 26. They defeated the team of Robert Bernstein 151–146.

Wu of San Francisco played with Jesse Chao, also of San Francisco, Alex Dezieck of Taipei, Taiwan, and Zhou “Jimmy” Wang of Jersey City NJ. William Zhu of New York also played on the team through Thursday but dropped out because he had a commitment to play in the Roth.

Wu put the team together and played with all of them at various points. Many of the combinations the team used were first-time partnerships.

“It was a last-minute team,” Wu said. “The day before it started, we decided on a roster. Even then it was touch and go.”

They’re first-time winners except for Dezieck, who won the Mini-Spingold three years ago in Atlanta. Wang was second in the Red Ribbon Pairs in 2014 and Chao third in that event last year.

Wu knew several of his teammates through the Collegiate Bridge Bowl and the Junior program. He played with Zhu for Berkeley while Wang played for Penn and plays with Chao at their club in San Francisco.
